Allow me if you will to be all hairdressy' technical for a bit.

Those of you who visit the salon will be aware that we don't use the clippers much. In fact Chris never uses them. I (Si) will, the other guys will have a play now and then but not that often.
There is nothing wrong with using clippers, they are a great tool and some great barbers will swear by them, their particular type of work requires them. 'Barber B' for example couldn't create his stunning work without them.

Some of our new clients use the phrase 'As short as you can with the scissors'. In other words 'Not as short as clippers.' We explain to the client it isn't about how long or short we can go with the scissors, it's about the finish.
A technique called 'scissor over comb' is used to create a very short style without clippers. A barber who has mastered this technique can go as short as if using clippers. Certainly down to a grade 1.
Using scissors gives a subtle softness to really short hair. And it is subtle, but it's there!!
Another reason we aren't so clipper happy at Remedy is that we feel scissor over combing is a dying art and skill, which can take years to master. We mastered it and we aint letting it go.

I should point out though, some of the best barbers on the planet use clippers most of the time. And they are incredibly good.
Most of these guys have mastered a clippering technique which, if your lucky i'll tell you about another day.

lucky you.!?

So, remember me mentioning Joe? Joe started our 1 to 1 15 week course at the Academy. He is now half way through. What can we say about him.....A natural to say the least. Half way through and he's well on the way. I don't mean well on the way to being an average barber. I mean well on the way to being a really good barber!! We are doing some really detailed and skilled work with him at the moment. I'd even go as far to say advanced work. I know many (!) barbers, who have been doing it a long time who aren't at his level. A very interesting second half of the course coming up. We are just wondering how good can we get him....

Remedy Hairdressing Academy Learners

We have recently been sending off a couple of new learners with a graduation certificate. Victoria and Kate have just completed our 4 day- course and it was our pleasure to have them in the Academy.
Victoria came with very little basic skills and after completion we are sure she will be very successful in her BBC career as stylist.
Kate was a very fast learner and got the grasp of traditional barbering in such a short time. (despite that the boys at our Leeds Hairdressing Academy were very keen to teach her a couple more extra days!!)
It seems that working in the Academy not only improves our learner's skills, but it has also a great impact on the quality of our own hairdressing. We are certainly raising the game on the shop floor. As stylist we at times need to get back to basics. Teaching does that.
We are now awaiting our 15 week course to begin. A guy called Joe has invested in a 15 week course. He has had no experience at all in barbering or any kind of hairdressing. Should be interesting, really looking forward to the experience!
